Ambasada Francuska /French Embassy

architect. Bernard Zehrfuss (renovated Jean-Philippe’a Pargade 2004)
finished. 1971

The corner stone of the embassy was put into place by de Gaulle himself in 1967. Zehrfuss was the Chief Architect of Public Buildings and National Palaces in France designing many embassies in the 60's and 70's. However the building was never a favorite with Varsoviennes who liken the effect of the windows and overall massiveness of the structure to a can of sardines or a Cold War bunker. The renovation at the turn of the century lightened the whole building, adding a glass atrium and opening up the entire ground floor.

I'm a fan of this style. I like it's location at the edge of the park and it has some prime real estate, it's across the street from the Polish government. It does stick out from it's immediate neigbors however, on the one side the Finish Houses (cute little wood bungalows) and on the other the modernist, 30's senate buildings. However, all the architecture sits amongst well-kept greenery which gives the effect of a sculpture garden.
